History of Rewa
Rewa, located in northeastern Madhya Pradesh, has a rich historical legacy rooted in the ancient Baghelkhand region and is closely associated with Indian epic traditions. The city rose to prominence in the 13th century under the Baghela Rajput dynasty, whose rulers traced their lineage to Lord Rama and made Rewa the capital of a powerful princely state. Over the centuries, Rewa maintained its importance through the medieval period, experienced Mughal influence, and later functioned as a major princely state under British paramountcy while retaining internal autonomy. Rewa gained international recognition in the 20th century as the birthplace of the world’s first white tiger, captured in 1951 by Maharaja Martand Singh, which brought global attention to wildlife conservation. After India’s independence, Rewa merged into the Indian Union and became part of Madhya Pradesh in 1956, emerging today as a key center for culture, education, and development in eastern Madhya Pradesh.
